Sleep tracking is one of the most common measurement when talking about self quantification nowadays. While the data becomes more precise through each device iteration, there is hardly any support available on how to make sense of it, left alone on how to improve your sleep. This project, called Sleep coach presents the next generation of a sleep tracking devices and is divided into two parts: A physical bedside device taking in the feedback and guides the user in a minimal and seamless way, as well as an accompanying digital application keeping track of your sleep data and creating your individual coaching program. This project is a collaboration with the Nokia healthcare offices in San Francisco and Paris.

"The biggest issue with all these devices is that they rarely tell a person what to do with their data“

Sleep tracking

Gathering sleep data can be done in multiple ways from a headband to an invisible mattress. Most of them rely on measuring your movement during the night to identify sleep phases such as light, deep or REM sleep. In addition some are able to record your heartbeat, breathing rate and environmental data such as temperature and humidity.

Problem definition

In most cases, people are highly interested in the beginning, but quickly stop tracking as they can't make use of the data. Just knowing that you had 4h of deep sleep won't help you understand if thats good or bad.

Concept development

To make use of the sleep data it has to be aligned with additional datasets to identify influences by activities during the day and bedtime. Instead of assuming user needs, a coach will guide the user through a 4 week program to identify how small adjustments influence your sleep quality.

Bedside coach

Your sleep coach seamlessly integrates into your bedroom environment, acting as a traditional clock while modern technology is hidden inside the textile covered body. Basic information is displayed via an e-ink display and motorized physical hands add to the analog feeling. The light-ring guides you during the night and helps you wake up relaxed in the morning.

Sensors

Through sound or an additional tracking matt, not only your sleep pattern, but also temperature, light and noise are being monitored. This way you can even track the impact of mobile devices in bed or identify a breathing problem. The data is synchronized with the accompanying app for easy evaluation.

Interaction

This is the first sleep tracking device which involves the user in the evaluation process. Three buttons on top allows for feedback through a single press while getting in or out of the bed. The wheel on the back eases the interaction while scrolling through information on the display or setting an alarm.

Appearance

Different CMf variations allow the sleep coach to blend into the environment.

Night mode

The coach will help you stick to your optimal sleep schedule. During night times, the light ring will illuminate the display and help you navigate.

Analysis

Beside the obvious influence being sleep efficiency, your daily activities highly influence your sleep quality. Activities and habits during the day and before bedtime have a direct impact on your wellbeing.

Interaction

Involving the user into the process of interpreting the data and using the feedback to develop a personal coaching program has been the main target of the project.

User journey

A typical day was analyzed to define the concept and develop a suitable system. Based on this a decision was made to include both a product and a digital solution.

User involvement

Using direct feedback from the user makes it possible to exactly define which parameters have an influence on the sleep quality and allows the sleeping coach to adapt to your personal needs.

Small steps

Changing habits is difficult, so why not taking it step by step? Easy to incorporate daily goals, will change according to the weekly theme in order to identify influences on the sleep quality.

App

While the bedside device displays only basic data, the user can get hold of details in the accompanied app. In simple and easy to understand visuals the user is guided through the sleep coach program, can see the progress, as well as the level of the influences.

Integration

The minimal bedise device seamlessly integrated into the home environment. Different colour schemes allows to choose the style which fits best for you.

Light

During night the lightring will help you interact with your sleep coach and in the morning it will gently wake you up.
